The Oscars 2012 Preview

This (late) Sunday night sees the 2012 Oscars, the highlight in the Movie calendar.

2011 was a truly great year, with many great films and performances.

There are nine Best Picture Nominations this year, and after its success at the Bafta’s The Artist seems set to have a great chance of a double.

My hopes rest though with the quite brilliant ‘The Descendants’ Starring George Clooney who I also hope picks up the Statue for Best Actor.

Britain’s Gary Oldman is nominated too for his portrayal of George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.  It would be great too if Oldman could win for Britain again on American soil.

If Clooney or Oldman got it I would be pleased.

Meryl Streep looks set to pick up a third Oscar for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Great Performance; not a great film. Reviewed here.

One thing I must mention though is the nomination of The Tree of life in the best picture category and for Terrence Malick for best director. I really found The Tree of Life a real stretch to watch and was one of my disappointments of the year, I am a massive fan of Mallick, but I thought it was far too vague and ambitious to say the least. It has received great critical acclaim however; just not from  me I’m sorry.

For me this nomination should have been taken up by ‘Drive’ which was my film of the year.
